The Koala Preservation Society of N.S.W. Inc. operates the Koala Hospital in Macquarie Nature Reserve in Port Macquarie, where up to 90 koalas have been cared for at any one time. During the bushfires near Port Macquarie in 1994, 89 koalas were rescued and treated at the Hospital.
