Aeronomy Laboratory (AL)
Conducting research on the chemical and dynamic processes of the Earth's atmosphere, the Aeronomy Laboratory seeks to provide a sound scientific basis for decisions made in industry and government related to ozone layer protection, air quality improvement, and climate change.
Air Resources Laboratory (ARL)
Researching the processes that affect the quality of the atmosphere, ARL provides scientific advice to elements of NOAA and other Government agencies on environmental problems and emergency response.
Atlantic Oceanographic & Meteorological Labora
Conducts research in oceanography, tropical meteorology, atmospheric and oceanic chemistry, and acoustics. The principal focus of these investigations is to provide knowledge that may ultimately lead to improved prediction and forecasting of severe storms, better use and management of marine resources, better understanding of the factors affecting both climate and environmental quality, and improved ocean and weather services for the nation.
Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Division
NOAA laboratory research activities are divided into three themes: Air Quality, Emergency Preparedness, and Climate Variability. Located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Climate Diagnostics Center (CDC)
Advances the understanding and predictions of climate variability through research, emphasizing state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques, directed at identifying the causes and potential predictability of important climate phenomena such as floods, droughts, the El Niño - Southern Oscillation and its global impacts, and decadal to centennial climate variations.
Climate Monitoring & Diagnostics Laboratory (C
Conducts research related to atmospheric constituents that are capable of forcing change in the climate of the earth or that may deplete the ozone layer. CMDL monitors greenhouse gases, aerosols, ozone, ozone-depleting gases and solar and terrestrial radiation at global sites including four Baseline Observatories.
Environmental Research Laboratories (ERL)
Research, technology development, and services to improve understanding of the Earth and its oceans and inland waters, the lower and upper atmosphere, and the space environment.
Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL)
Supports NOAA's environmental monitoring and stewardship charter by performing fundamental oceanic and atmospheric research and developing new remote-sensing systems and techniques.
Forecast Systems Laboratory (FSL)
The Forecast Systems Laboratory conducts atmospheric and oceanic research and develops new technologies and scientific advancements for transfer to the operational elements of NOAA and other domestic and foreign organizations.
Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL)
The goal of GFDL's research is to understand and predict the earth's climate and weather, including the impact of human activities. GFDL conducts leading-edge research on many topics of great practical value, including weather and hurricane forecasts, El Niño prediction, stratospheric ozone depletion, and global warming.
Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL)
Conducts integrated, interdisciplinary environmental research in support of resource management and environmental services in coastal and estuarine waters, with a special emphasis on the Great Lakes.
National Sea Grant Office
The National Sea Grant Program provides a bridge between government, academia, industry, scientists, and private citizens to help Americans understand and sustainably use our precious Great Lakes and ocean waters for long-term economic growth.
National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL)
Conducts research to improve accurate and timely forecasts and warnings of hazardous weather events such as blizzards, ice storms, flash floods, tornadoes, and lightning.
National Undersea Research Program (NURP)
NURP supports undersea science and technology. Researchers from around the world use scuba, underwater observatories, and submersibles to study marine environmental problems.
Office of Global Programs (OGP)
NOAA's Office of Global Programs assists NOAA by sponsoring focused scientific research aimed at understanding climate variability and it predictability.
Office of Oceanic & Atmospheric Research (OAR)
The primary research arm of NOAA, providing scientific information and tools toward a clearer understanding of the oceans and atmosphere, and how human activity can affect them.
Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL)
Lab carries out interdisciplinary scientific investigations in oceanography, marine meteorology, and related subjects. Topics include interannual climate foreasts, environmental change, and tsunami warning systems.
Space Environment Laboratory (SEC)
SEC is the Nation's official source of space weather alerts and warnings. The Center continually monitors and forecasts Earth's space environment; provides solar-terrestrial information; and leads programs to improve services.
