The peers reinstated the plans for a registration system originally proposed by the government but later rejected in the House of Commons. The committee stages of the bill continue in the Lords on Wednesday next week.

The House of Lords on Tuesday reversed a complete ban on fox hunting in legislation approved by the House of Commons, and sent it back to the Commons for another vote.

Amanda Brown, environment correspondent, PA News. Mark Shotton, master of the hunt in Tony Blair's Sedgefield constituency in the North East said: "I just wish people would realise that if fox hunting is banned, everything will be killed by the guns, which is what has happened in Scotland."

Peers rejected the complete ban on fox hunting backed by MPs and voted for a licensing system for hunts.

Graham Tibbetts. 44 per cent believe anti-hunting Labour MPs are motivated by class war rather than animal welfare, according to an ICM poll published yesterday. 38 per cent backed a complete ban, 30 per cent supported a licensing system and 24 per cent advocated the status quo.

Almost half the deer killed by hunting last season were already suffering from road accident or shot wounds according to ISAH, the sport's regulatory body. 43 per cent of foxes killed were either a nuisance to farmers or suffering from mange.

Andrew Sparrow. The Government is reluctant to make firm commitments about what they will do next. According to Whitehall sources, Mr Blair does not want a Bill banning hunting to be seen by the public as a Government measure.
