Doing Internet Research
Don MacDonald and John Pauly, professors of communication at the University of Tulsa, developed and regularly taught a course titled "Inquiry in Communication" offered in that department. At the very start of the term they would challenge undergraduates to unfailingly ask "So what?" and "Who cares?" questions when the students would read research, and when the students would begin to plan research projects of their own. Those questions are critically important to research not merely because they should drive scholars to justify their work, nor simply because they may give us insight into the motivation(s) of scholarship, but, rather, they engage scholar and reader in a conversation about values
Education Program at The General Clinical Research

Manufacturing Research Center - UIC [front]
The Manufacturing Research Center (MRC) is jointly run by the two campuses of the University of Illinois: the Chicago Campus and the Urbana Champaign Campus. History The Manufacturing Research Center (MRC) was founded in 1988 as a result of a grant received from Motorola. Motorola awarded grants to three Universities (each $ 200K per year, over five years, MIT, University of Illinois, Georgia Tech) to sponsor research activities on manufacturing technologies. Since then the following companies joined the MRC: GM, Ford, Caterpillar, John Deere, Ingersoll Milling Co, Rockford Acromatic, Sun Micro Systems. Current annual operating budget of MRC is about $1M.

UIC - IESP About
At UIC, there is significant depth in environmental research and scholarship extending over six colleges. However, as at most universities, substantial structural barriers to collaboration exist. In recognition of this, over forty faculty and staff members from among twelve departments and three centers met for a two-day planning session in May of 1998 during which the vision and basic mission of IESP were set forth, and a formal petition seeking to form the institute was drafted. This received administrative approval in early 2000, with Professor Steven L. Forman of Earth and Environmental Science appointed as Interim Director. Under his leadership, the institute established its initial presence on campus through the sponsorship of seminars and conferences, and assembly of the Steering Committee
UIC Artificial Intelligence Lab
The UIC Artificial Intelligence Laboratory specializes in applied AI research and development. Since its inception in 1991 we have undertaken a variety of applied intelligent systems projects in the areas of transportation, molecular biology, and electronics manufacturing optimization. Our work differs from most other AI research groups around the world in that our primary goal does not revolve around the understanding of biological intelligence. Instead our focus is on the application of derived AI methodologies for solving real-world problems.
